Original Old Norse: | Auden & Taylor: | Bellows: | Bray: |
Ráðumk þér Loddfáfnir en þú ráð nemir njóta mundu ef þú nemr þér munu góð ef þú getr illan mann láttu aldregi óhöpp at þér vita því at af illum manni fær þú aldregi gjöld ins góða hugar |
Never open your heart to an evil man When fortune does not favour you: From an evil man, if you make him your friend, You will get evil for good. |
I rede thee, Loddfafnir! | and hear thou my rede,-- Profit thou hast if thou hearest, Great thy gain if thou learnest: An evil man | thou must not let Bring aught of ill to thee; For an evil man | will never make Reward for a worthy thought. |
117. I counsel thee, Stray-Singer, accept my counsels, they will be thy boon if thou obey'st them, they will work thy weal if thou win'st them: tell not ever an evil man if misfortunes thee befall, from such ill friend thou needst never seek return for thy trustful mind. |
Chisholm: | Hollander: | Terry: | Thorpe: |
I give you rede Loddfafnir, heed it well! You will use it if you learn it, it will get you good if you understand it. Never tell your hardships to foemen, for you will never get a reward for your good wishes from evil men. |
Hear thou, Loddfafnir, and heed it well, learn it, 'twill lend thee strength, follow it, 'twill further thee: withhold the hardships which happen to thee from the knowledge of knaves; for, know thou, from knaves thou wilt never have reward for thy good wishes. |
Heed my words, Loddfafnir, listen to my counsel; you'll be better off if you believe me, follow my advice, and you'll fare well: never tell a man you can't trust that you've lost your luck; you'll be ill rewarded if you think well of a malicious man. |
119. I counsel thee, etc. A bad man let thou never know thy misfortunes; for from a bad man thou never wilt obtain a return for thy good will. |
Confiding in someone who has nothing but negative, fills you with negative. We all know people like this, where EVERYTHING is drama and bad.. those who are so miserable in their own lives that they need to make you miserable as well. This stanzaq is rightfully telling us to avoid those people. I have a sister whom I've not spoken with in years, due to this very reason. Everything with her is doom and gloom and vile.. you can tell her you just won a million dollars, and her reaction will be that you will lose it to taxes, and people will cheat you, and the money will ruin your life.. then ask how much you will give her. Avoid these folks. |
